It s often said in Martial Arts that the meaning doesn t lie in how good you are or what belt you have, rather the meaning lies in the journey. Before I get into What Black Belt Means To Me , I would like to talk about my journey of these past few months. The Journey Last week I had flown to Nashville to test for my long awaited San Dan 3rd degree Black Belt - This is kind of like becoming an official Teacher . Prior to the test I had been training consistently since April of this year at a friends dojo and my local gym. It had been about 5 years since I ve last practiced my discipline, Wado-Ryu Karate-Do, so my recollection of the system was very vague. After watching numerous tapes of myself as a young martial artist, I had re-learned my under belt curriculum, however I was struggling to remember my black belt curriculum. If you know anything about martial arts, one s under belt knowledge is essential because it is considered as the foundation of one s training. On the...

Headache is such a friendly disease, you have it some time or the other, or for that matter in every season at the least. It is rather difficult to enumerate all the causes of headache. There are many types of headaches. Headache is not an independent entity as such. It is dependent on the account of various causes such as allergy headaches, sinus, migraine and many more. Some of the headaches prolong their presence but they are not that severe as such. Some however are instant and severe headaches. When you have severe headache, your condition becomes so worst; the position is so unbearable that you need instant medication for urgent relief. To add to your woes, these headaches are associated with sneezing and you feel that your head is carrying some unbearable weight. If the headache prolongs, you find it difficult to bear its severity. Ibuprofen is the known medication in this condition. If your severe headache is due to allergy, physicians use oxygen machines and drugs...

Before you reach that cup of coffee or that bar of chocolate, which will probably only give you an energy boost for a couple of minutes and your probably feel worse after it as your body crashes again and you end up at square one again. Here is a breathing exercise you can use as a natural energy booster, find a place where you can relax either on a bed or upright in a chair, because this exercise can bring on a feeling of dizziness to the beginner trying it out please don t try to do it in a standing position or whilst in your car. Firstly get yourself comfortable position whether suiting in a chair or lying on your bed and keep your back in straight position so nothing is effecting the air flow. Close your mouth and start to breathe in and out through your nose in a rapid fashion, try to breath about 2-3 inhalations a second for about 10 seconds. I know that at the start it will probably feel awkward and you will fill your muscle are having to work harder this is good...

You don t have to be an elite athlete to suffer Achilles tendon injuries. They can occur even from performing minor household tasks, such as climbing a ladder. According to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons ACFAS , Achilles tendon weakness is common in adults and prompt treatment when symptoms occur can prevent more serious injury. The Achilles tendon is the longest and strongest tendon in the body, but is subjected to considerable wear and tear, said Gerald Travers, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle surgeon in Colorado Springs. When the tendon becomes inflamed from overuse or too much sudden stress, tendonitis can weaken it over time and cause microscopic tears, said Travers. Going without treatment increases risk for further deterioration and possible rupture. According to the ACFAS consumer Web site, FootPhysicans.com, pain, stiffness and tenderness in the area are the main symptoms of Achilles tendonitis. Pain occurs in the morning, improves with motion but...

People sometimes wonder whether they can be hypnotized. Incredible, but true - there are professional hypnotists and hypnotherapists today who still seem to believe that only certain percentage of people can be hypnotized, and that is what they are teaching through their books, courses, websites and seminars. The origin of these misconceptions may be traced to several hypnotizability scales. Two of the more popular are Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scales created in 1959 and Harvard Group Scales created in 1962 . Based on the tests performed, the researchers involved in creation of these hypnotizability scales have concluded that 5 of people cannot be hypnotized and that only about 10 can experience deep trance phenomena like auditory and visual hallucinations, and the ability to remain deeply in hypnosis with eyes open. If you are unfamiliar with hypnotic phenomena, visual hallucinations can be positive hallucinations - if you happen to see something that doesn t...

In the medical world a hemorrhoid is described as an enlarged or swollen vein. Hemorrhoids are somewhat similar to varicose veins that develop in the legs, except that hemorrhoids are veins located in the anus. These veins cushion and protect the anal canal. Pain and problems occur when these veins are stretched and tear under pressure. Hemorrhoids are a very common medical problem seen in both men and women, usually over the age of 30, with most suffering from hemorrhoids between the ages of 45 and 65 years old. It is estimated that more than a half million people seek treatment for symptomatic hemorrhoids each year in the United States. Of this half million hemorrhoid suffers, 10 to 20 percent will need surgical treatment. Most medical professionals blame the formation of hemorrhoids on prolonged sitting on the toilet and chronic straining due to constipation. Hemorrhoids are also very common during pregnancy, due to the strain from carrying the excess weight of the...

If we want a new reality, we have to make new choices. After all, the very definition of insanity is to do the same thing always and expect a different result. When we change our actions, we change our results. A perfect case in point is my Godmother, famed Hollywood costumer Edith Head. At age thirty she was teaching French to an all girls school in California, and because she had studied a semester abroad in Europe the school assumed she could also teach art. She in fact couldn t draw more than stick figures but took on the task. While looking in the paper one day, she saw a contest for drawing costumes for one of the major movie studios. She wanted a change in career and boldly without permission borrowed some of her student s sketches and entered the contest. When showing up on the first day and being asked to draw, she was found out, but her courage and presumption so captivated the costume designer that he took her on. The rest is history including 8 Oscars for...
